Tax Relief For Flooded Californians

Today the IRS announced that California storm victims will have until May 15, 2023, to make their tax payments and file their federal individual and business tax returns.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has added the following counties to the disaster area: Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Los Angeles, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Ventura, Yolo and Yuba

This means that people who live or have businesses in these counties qualify for relief.

As a result of this tax relief, a variety of payment and tax filing deadlines that occurred starting on January 8, 2023, have been postponed until May 15, 2023. Individuals and businesses will have until then to pay any taxes and file returns that were due during that time.

Individual tax returns that are due on April 18, 2023 and various business returns ordinarily due March 15, 2023 and April 18, 2023 are included. Taxpayers who are in the qualifying counties have until May 15, 2023 to make their 2022 HSA and IRA contributions. The deadline also applies to estimated tax payments, ordinarily due on January 17, 2023, and April 18, 2023. This means that individual taxpayers can skip making the fourth estimated tax payment and include it on or before May 15, 2023 with their 2022 tax return.

Taxpayers with an IRS address of record located in a disaster area do not need to contact the IRS as filing and penalty relief will be automatically provided. The IRS will work with taxpayers who reside outside the disaster area but who have records necessary to meet the deadline located in a disaster area. A taxpayer who lives outside a disaster area but qualifies for relief will need to contact the IRS at 856-562-5227.
