Personal tax credits

A careful review of the credits available to you.

Mraz Tax Solutions LLC helps individuals and families identify federal and state tax credits as part of complete personal tax preparation. We review your eligibility, calculate the available benefit, and explain which supporting documents to keep.

Our Enrolled Agents serve busy professionals, working parents, students, retirees, and self-employed taxpayers in Orange County and nationwide. We apply the rules for your filing year, including changes affecting 2025 returns and 2026 tax planning.

Child Tax Credit & Other Dependents

We review qualifying children and other dependents, including age, residency, support, income phaseouts, and identification requirements. We determine the Child Tax Credit, any refundable Additional Child Tax Credit, or Credit for Other Dependents available for the tax year you are filing.

Child & Dependent Care Credit

Care expenses may qualify when they allow you, and your spouse if filing jointly, to work or look for work. We review care for children under 13 and other qualifying persons who cannot care for themselves, provider information, earned income, and employer dependent-care benefits.

Adoption Credit

We review qualified adoption expenses such as agency fees, court costs, attorney fees, and eligible travel. Domestic, foreign, and special-needs adoptions have different timing and eligibility rules. We also check current-year refundability rules, employer assistance, and credit carryforwards.

Education Credits

The American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit cover different students and expenses. We review Form 1098-T, tuition, required materials, scholarships, and 529 distributions to determine eligibility and avoid claiming more than one tax benefit for the same expense.

Earned Income Tax Credit

The EITC can reduce tax or create a refund for eligible workers and families. We review earned income, filing status, investment income limits, residency, and qualifying-child rules. Self-employment records and accurate dependent information are important to supporting your claim.

Foreign Tax Credit

Foreign tax credits may apply to qualifying foreign income taxes even if you live in the United States. We review foreign-source income, taxes paid or accrued, Form 1116 requirements, income categories, and carryovers to help prevent the same income from being taxed twice.

Retirement Savings / Saver's Credit

Eligible low- and moderate-income taxpayers may claim the Saver's Credit for qualifying retirement contributions on their 2026 return. We check income, age, student and dependent status, and recent distributions. This credit is separate from any deduction allowed for a traditional IRA contribution.

Home Energy Credits: Prior-Year Claims

We review qualifying 2025 and earlier home improvements under the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit and Residential Clean Energy Credit rules. Installation dates, product eligibility, invoices, and prior credits matter. These credits are no longer available for new property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Clean Vehicle Credits: Prior-Year Claims

Federal new and previously owned clean vehicle credits ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. We review eligible earlier acquisitions, seller reports, income limits, and credits transferred to a dealer. A transferred credit still needs to be reported and reconciled on the applicable return.

Understand your tax benefits

What are tax credits, and how do they work?

A deduction reduces taxable income. A tax credit reduces the tax itself. We explain which credits apply to your circumstances and how they interact with your income, withholding, and other tax benefits.

  1. Refundable vs. Nonrefundable Credits

A refundable credit can produce a refund even when it exceeds your tax. A nonrefundable credit generally reduces tax only to zero, though certain credits allow unused amounts to carry forward. Some credits have both refundable and nonrefundable portions, with separate eligibility rules.

  2. Check Eligibility for the Right Tax Year

Income thresholds, dependent requirements, and credit amounts can change. We review the rules for the specific return being filed, including federal and applicable state credits. A change in income, marriage, custody, education, or retirement contributions can change what you qualify for.

  3. Coordinate Benefits & Keep the Evidence

The same expense often cannot support two tax benefits. We coordinate education credits with scholarships and 529 withdrawals, dependent care credits with workplace benefits, and adoption credits with employer reimbursements. Clear records help support your claim if the IRS requests more information.
